I've used phpList as a newsletter, largest a few hundred subscribers, 
and for email marketing. A customer also used it, low thousands per 
issue. It is known as being capable of handling 100,000+ subscribers but 
I don't know if that's proven or apocryphal. The Nobel foundation have 
publicised the fact that they use it so it can certainly do "large" lists.

Highly configurable, plain text and/or HTML, usually very reliable. Last 
time I used it, 12-18 months ago, can't remember exactly, there was a 
glitch with an upgrade whereby a name field did not work reliably. e.g. 
subscribers would all receive Hello [YOURNAME] instead of Hello Mike, 
Hello Chris, etc. but I  believe that's been fixed. Otherwise, I've used 
several of its very many features and it has worked well.
