I really don't understand it. It seems very mouse intensive. I just open
it and use the search bar to find what I want by typing.

Or rather, I used to... then I went back to Gnome 2 aka "Ubuntu
Classic".

Hadn't particularly noticed this, although now you mention it nm-applet
seems to keep dying on me so maybe you're right :-/
