I kind of expected that would be the most common (and entirely
rational) response.

I didn't want to overload my initial message by mentioning it, but one
reason for thinking about an external SSD was to reduce admin on the
machines I run at home as well ... instead of adding yet another
system to the collection.

My fantasy was that by booting my own systems from the SDD, rather
than mounting their drives over the network as I often do now, I might
avoid some of the hassle of managing all the different configs
separately.

Having thought about it a bit longer, that obviously isn't going to
work ... since they'll still diverge when I have to run them
separately and/or in parallel ... {sigh}
