Certain "effects" are known to be troublesome on some machines - it
pays to try switching off all effects then enabling one at a time.
"Blur" is one that I know has caused problems.

This laptop has Intel integrated graphics and I find it better to
leave effects off altogether - bells and whistles don't particularly
appeal to me.
