As root, you can use any unused port (althought as you say, anything in
/etc/services would be a bad thing except 80 :) ). If the server isnt
being started by root, anything over 1024 can be used, 8080 is a popular
one, but that is also used by a lot of caching systems. 80/81/8081 is a
popular combination, with 443 for SSL connections.
