The main reasons for this are

a)  RAM - under 64, or over 849 (IIRC).  The Enterprise kernel deals
with the latter.
b)  ACPI and APIC problems.  There's plenty of info about dealing with
these, if you google or check the Mandrake mailing list archives
c)  Some older video cards (or very new ones) - some nvidia ones need
extra drivers (and all do for 3d work)
