If you run the following command:
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts
and it comes back as "1" rather than "0" then your box is configured to
ignore ping requests (this sort of thing is usually set up with a line
in /etc/sysclt.conf).
I don't if this is the cause or not, but it's worth checking.
