The dodgy mouse business certainly sounds like it's an X
configuration/server problem. I'm wondering if the keystrokes aren't
appearing when you have maybe touched the touchpad when typing.
Have you tried just running vim in an xterm or just under a console?
With the mouse disabled in X? Did you write the XF86Config yourself?
Maybe a google for an XF86Config for that particular machine might be
an idea. Also could be a problem with the version of X you're running
and your particular graphics card.
Always worthwhile looking through the manpage for your particular X
server eg: man XF86_Mach64 as sometimes they describe a useful
configuration tweak.

Those WMD in perspective:
"The 1995 nerve agent attack in Tokyo was carried out by a group of
20 or 30 people, some with scientific training and access to a
well-equipped lab. They killed 12 people.
Last week, a single lunatic with a bottle of gasoline (petrol)
killed 133 on a Korean subway."
