It is probably a better idea to get an external modem, it is a more flexible
approach.
Having said that, I made the mistake of getting a HCF (Controllerless) modem
made by Motorola but since bought out by conexant.
This is a "winmodem". Fortunately about a year ago an ex-conexant employee
embarked on making linux drivers for some winmodems. Try
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ . My modem is supported :) this has been
working fine for me from beta release. (2.4.X kernels).
