Thanks everyone,

Especial thanks to Nigel who (sort of) provided the winning
suggestion, i.e. "-X -v".

What had happened was that everything was ok, until the final bit to
do with xauth. This tried to create a ~me/.Xauthority file. The
username I was logging in with did not have a home directory, and so
creating this file failed.

I was trying to get the admintool up and running to permit me to set
up usernames and home directories correctly.

A bit of "root"ing around to tweak /etc/passwd, and to manually create
a $HOME directory has fixed it.

Thanks again.

Dave
