yes both adsl and cable.

Most people buy a suitable router to connect several machines to
the internet - the router doing the Masquerading (Network Address
Translation) that's needed.

You can of course build your own linux router. Many use the smoothwall
distro or similar to do that. Going the linux way with any old spare
machine and suitable interfaces is a good learning exercise.
