 Thanks to all for the helpful advice,
       The Mandrake hardware lists show that my modem is not listed.    I
am in process of checking further helpful sites.
       Further digging in the depths of Mandrake finally revealed the cause
of the black screen to be a "Screen Saver" set to 'blank' after 1 minute !!
and requiring password.
        Re: bootdisk, I feel I may have confused Bootdisk with Bootloader,
it may be that I really want LILO on a floppy, can this be done just by
copying lilo.conf to a floppy ? I suspect there must be more to it than that.
