All,

Having only ever printed to network printers recently, I've just
connected a new printer up to the parallel port on my laptop.

I can't get it to print under Linux.

Having booted FreeDOS and set it up with the right settings (0x3bc,irq
7, DMA 3, ECP) I can print from FreeDOS by doing `dir > lpt1:` but I
can't perform a similar operation from Linux.

dmesg says:

parport0: PC-style at 0x3bc (0x7bc), irq 7, dma 3
[PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP,DMA]
parport0: faking semi-colon
parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 2100 Series

And I have:

crw------- 1 root root 99, 0 Jun 14 09:52 /dev/parport0

and

crw------- 1 root root 6, 0 Jun 14 09:38 /dev/lp0

But when I try to do a basic test, I get:

thinkpad root # dir / > /dev/lp0
- -bash: /dev/lp0: No such device

Anyone have any ideas? Bear in mind that `dir > lpt1:` works in DOS.

I have the parport and parport_pc modules loaded. I'm running 2.4.22 on
Gentoo.

James
