That may be the reason, Nigel.  The old box had a 12x cd reader in,
although I replaced that with a 24x one, and it made no difference.
The Celeron 300 box has a 36x cd-rom.

Of course the two problems may be unrelated, but from the messages I'm
seeing from both MEPIS and Mandrake it would appear that it can boot,
but then can't find the cdrom at the next stage.  Further - the message
from Mandrake asked which scsi device it should then try, which
suggests to me some sort of problem related to scsi-emulation.  What do
you think?
