Many early CD drives could not read CD-R media.
Even more drives cannot read CD-RW media, or can only read some brands.

Just looking at CD (pressed) and CD-R/CD-RW media shows a significant
difference in reflectivity - and older drives need more reflectivity
back from the media to work.
