[Wylug-help] Various distros

I've just built a box mainly from scavenged parts, but with an ASRock
K7VT2 mobo. It didn't need to be state-of-the-art - in fact it
shouldn't be, to use the rest of the bits. Anyway, the goal was to
have a box on which I could experiment - install any distros that
people talked about - try them. My first efforts, however, have me
somewhat baffled.

Knoppix, SuSE LiveEval and MEPIS all started, but a few seconds in (I
just quickly saw 'initrd' on one of them) then all the lights on the
monitor started blinking, and that was that.

Lindows installed without a problem. OK - I've looked at it. It's not
as bad as people say, but in simplifying it takes away choice. I
certainly wouldn't want to stay with it, but then I was only evaluating
it for a complete beginner. So, what next?

Mandrake 10 is now 3/4 of the way to an install and going strong.

What could have caused the problem with the first three distros, I
wonder? The only thing I could think of to try was acpi=off, which
made no difference. As an evaluation box it's not going to be much
good if I can't install most distros. Anyone got any ideas?
