Gary,
You need something between yr vtr and yr pc that will convert the
composite video coming out of your vtr into dv format that you can feed
into yr PC via firewire (usb2 might be fast enough, but I have doubts
about vanilla usb).
There are purpose designed boxes for this conversion, but you don't
actually need one.
Many dv cameras have composite video and audio inputs precisely so that
they can record (in vtr mode) material from external devices onto the
internal dv tape. In most cases they will also produce a dv signal at
the firewire output for monitoring purposes regardless of whether you
are actually recording onto the tape in the camera. This signal you can
feed through to a firewire card in yr PC.
