NOT such a silly question. It worked!! Many, many thanks. I don't know if anything is missing, but a quick go at writing some meaningless text showed OK. (rpm -ivh --nodeps packagename) not -Uvh because there was, as yet, no package installed to upgrade. Mike Goodman
