Andy,
             /etc/ppp/peers/provider   has line       defaultroute

and  route -n  gives      Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
192.168.0.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth0
0.0.0.0         192.168.0.1     0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth0

The fields shown on the OS center network interface setup facility when
set to static IP are :-
       IP Address 192.168.0.10
                        Netmask  255.255.255.0
         Gateway Address  192.168.0.1
     Broadcast Address   192.168.0.255

 Hope this helps,  gateway  0.0.0.0 looks suspicious to my simple mind !
 Incidentally adding a second card set to static IP causes the  same problem.
