It's there in Debian too, so I should have looked.  

I think that I was just tired at the end of a very long session on
different distros, some of which didn't install the odd old-style CLI
tool by default (e.g. locate), or didn't include them in root's path,
etc.

Thanks, that's essentially what I wanted to know. 

I'd only looked for route and ifconfig first, because they tend to be
the cross-distro lowest common denominators.
