[Wylug-help] Pam Password and obscure

Hello,

I am checking the security of some of my servers to decide if I am paranoid 
enough.   By default the passwording is configured as 

   password   required   pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5

I have been googling and have failed to discover the paranoia level implied by 
the use of the "obscure" flag above.

Can anyone enlighten me?
