Output from the GIMP Print plugin might not be PostScript.  If
available, you should configure it to use a native Gimp-Print printer
driver, which will output graphics directly for the printer (lpr -o
raw).  If this isn't available, you'll need to use a generic PCL or
PostScript driver.  Either way, there's an initial bit of setup
required.  If you have chosen the wrong printer model, what you
describe is not atypical!

If you aren't sure what's going on, print to a file and take a peek at
what is printed.
