Dunno if it is significant or not, but am I spotting two references to
sounds here? If so, should I ditch the PCI sound card and concentrate on
getting the "onboard" one working? Or disable the onboard before trying
the PCI version? Typed in vi /etc/modprobe.conf as root and got:
alias eth0 via-rhine
options snd-via82xx index=0
remove snd-via82xx { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1
|| : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-via82xx
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd
alias snd-card-0 snd-ca0106
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-ca0106 index=0
remove snd-ca0106 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1
|| : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-ca0106
