I'm not criticising your aim, just questioning slightly the logic.

These all in one boxes might provide functionality that you don't need, but
depending on the price you can get this for you're not paying for the extra
function.

You can buy a WAG54G, plop on the modded firmware from whoever it is, and have
a linux based wireless ADSL router with a web and ssh interface.  It'll
probably cost you no more.  I've a WAG354G but haven't modded the firmware.
Also the functionality that you don't need now, *could* come in useful in
future.

Also that device doesn't support the higher performance ADSL2+ standard, so
it's 8Mbit max.  This probably (read almost certainly) isn't an issue, but you
could get a WAG354G that does.
