Ctrl-T gets you a new tab.

Ctrl-W closes the current tab.

Middle-clicking a link to load a link in a new tab, whilst remaining on
the current one is very useful too. I tend to use this for opening links
from news sites eg: slashdot and then working my way through the
resulting tabs.
