Firslty, one question of mine is how come and from the 4-5 or 5 replies most are
gnome users and 1 xfce user while none a kde and still the poll on
linuxquestions give 66% to kde as the most popular desktop environment which is
twice gnome? Anyway my two cents below...

No, Qt can be free and open source if you use it for free and for open source
(GPL). BUT, if you want to use it commercially then it is not free anymore.
Unlike GTK, the libraries begind gnome.

You just said the magic word.... Let's just say that it is OK that you expect a
gui in linux that is close to the one in windows.... but if you expect
everything else to be similar and you don't have the time or the mood to learn
a little bit about a new OS (remember the first time you booted to win?) then
you better re-install windows.

It's not an obssession. Let me start by saying that both desktop environments
are damn user friendly and I have used both of them. Having said that I prefer
Gnome. Why?? Because I am used to the simplicity yet the amazing efficieny of
Gnome. Because my desktop looks aesthetically more pleasing on my eye. Because
Gnome does now have a centralised "control/kontrol panel"; ok it is pseudo
centralised since it is basically a new menu (System). Because I am programming
in GTK and GTK applications look from average to super-cool. Qt applications
look from absolutely disgusting to super-cool. Eg. look at the three
applications for voip, ekiga (thats the new name for gnomemeeting) and gizmo
(both GTK) are very nice while openwengo (Qt) as an interface is rubbish
(although it has the same functionality as gizmo and better rates for europe,
and I hope they do something about it since it a very nice application from
europe).

Ehmmm, I am not really sure what you mean.... but no matter which de you use you
can use application written in GTK or Qt... because these are just applications
for any desktop environment which just happen to use one or the other gui
libraries which is also used for the de. They are not binded to one or the
other... That's why gnomemeeting has changed the name to ekiga as it wanted to
get rid of the gnome prefix. Furthermore if you gApplication it doen's signify
gnome but gtk the same qApplication. Now gnomeApllication or kApplication is a
rubbish tactic for naming applications as they signify that they are binded for
the particular desktop. So just to finish with your question there is no
dependence between the applications and the desktop environments... The only
dependence is between the applications and the libraries...

Btw, you swifted to linux and you started with slackware... I ve never used it
but I heard that there are more friendly distros than slack, such as ubuntu,
fedora, suse...
