[Wylug-help] Does anyone here understand spumux?

I've created the background and a spumux control file which I've called 
airport.xml (which defines the buttons).  It's not at all clear how to use 
spumux.  I tried 

mplex -f 8 -o /dev/stdout airport.m2v airport.mp2 | spumux -v 2 airport.xml > 
airport.mpg

based on the examples I've seen, and it appeared to mplex, but all I have is a 
black screen in mplayer.  Clearly I'm missing something.  Any help, please?
