Have a look at memtest86 - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memtest86

There appears to be some politics around the project now - hence the  
wikipedia link.  You may also find that your linux distro has  
memtest86 as either an install CD boot option and/or a run time boot  
option.
