To the best of my knowledge, it's never been meaningfully possible for
journalled ext2 (that is, for ext3), because the way the journalling
works means that the block numbers in the inode have to be zeroed out.

In the absence of any vestiges of file metadata on disk, the only
option for recovering files from ext3 is essentially to grep for data
that you happen to know is in the specific files you want to recover.
