Among our clients, 98% of our servers are CentOS, mostly 5 but now some 6.
More often than not they will have the EPEL repo and sometimes Atomic which
isn't restrictive for a stable server environment. The speed of updates is
because it's a voluntary project and the RedHat source code has to be
recompiled into installable patches. The advantage of this is that it's a
rock solid enterprise-class free operating system that's consistent
everywhere, which is a huge advantage for hosting companies. Essential
security patches are kept up to date and if you want anything away from the
main channels, someone will build it or, with the source code, you can -
the RPM system is surprisingly easy to work with.

On the desktop I still use Ubuntu. I like Unity but more because it doesn't
get in my way than for any of its features, although I like the toolbar..
I'm not bothered about LTS releases as they have often been more unstable
at the more esoteric end than the six monthly releases. I tend to give each
new version a month to get stable after release. For that matter my NAS is
an Ubuntu server. It's excellent for home servers because of the range of
software available, not to mention that most how-tos are written for it.
