You should search for virtualhost and namevirtualhost. So you can define
virtualhosts for your subdomains and you can use same ip for all of them.

realise that I am unable to access subdomains from the external ip address
that the server is on.  However I am now wanting the correct terminology
for me to find howto solve this issue of not being able to access the sub
domains from the same external ip address as the server using apache2. Can
