Sorry I probably didn't explain it properly. Take for example cloud.mysite.com, I have named vhosts set up and working from the internet, however if I am connecting to cloud.mysite.com from my home network/internet - which is the same network the server is on - it does not recognise it.

You should search for virtualhost and namevirtualhost. So you can define virtualhosts for your subdomains and you can use same ip for all of them.

Brilliant I have been able to setup my website with subdomains now that I realise that I am unable to access subdomains from the external ip address that the server is on.  However I am now wanting the correct terminology for me to find howto solve this issue of not being able to access the sub domains from the same external ip address as the server using apache2. Can anyone offer some advice please so I can search for a solution?
