This is good advice, but if you want to be sure you'll have
to boot of a live CD and then run chkrootkit. Try auditor.

As Alex says, unless you have specific reasons to think otherwise,
a desktop linux system is unlikely to have been hacked. Something
running php apps on the other hand..... :)
