Actually, it appears that OpenOffice can read them if they are MS
Excel 2003 XML files. However, OOo needs a working Java Runtime in
order to do that.

I installed java-gcj-compat, but I'm then told that it is "defective"
when it tries to load the file. Does anyone know which packages (on
Debian) are needed to get working Java in OOo?

Thanks,
Roger
