Ah. I wouldn't expect this to work.

The VPN will direct all packets from your home machine to
the VPN endpoint, while your connection from campus will
come back to your home directly and not over the VPN.
There'll then be confusion.

If you did a ifconfig to see what ip addr the pptp interface
has (172.x.x.x) you will be able to ssh back to your home
machine via that IP.

The more general question is: what are you trying to do
here? There's probably another way of doing it that will
work.
