It seems there are already a collection of non-geographic LUGs

maybe worth contacting them an asking them how they set up and organise?

BTW I'd personally have ignored the "Microsoft will always rule because
I know best!!!!" e-mail as written by someone who will never be
interested in a LUG - their loss.
