[YLUG] /proc/meminfo vs xosview

Can anyone explain how the information in /proc/meminfo relates to what gets 
displayed in xosview?
/proc/meminfo seems to make things very difficult to work out how much memory 
is really used excluding caches and buffers. I've tried to work this out a 
number of times but regardless of the combinations I use the numbers never 
add up to the total memory.
