it's probably not your hardware; try a later distribution.
i'm fairly sure a bug was introduced between two releases that caused
CDs to hang the whole system: it worked fine for me for ten months, then an upgrade
caused the problem you describe, then after a much later upgrade the
problem went away.  i wasn't sure which update/upgrade caused the problem
because i don't use the cd that often.  (i'm on ubuntu 7.04 now.)
