[YLUG] Will a 20" monitor work with Radeon 7500

Hello Everyone,

My brother wants to get a 20-inch monitor as a gift for his girlfriend. The monitor has a native resolution of 1680x1050. Her computer has Radeon 7500 graphics card.

According to the ATI/AMD website, the 7500 has a maximum resolution of 2048x1536, but doesn't explicitly support 1680x1050--see http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon7500/radeon7500/specs.html

I myself have an older box with a Radeon 9200; according to the official specs, it too doesn't explicitly support 1680x1050, but it has no trouble with a 22-inch monitor and supports its native 1680x1050 resolution.

My question is, is there any way of knowing if a Radeon 7500 is going to support a native resolution of 1680x1024 without stretching or resizing? Would updating the driver at the ATI website be a possible solution?

As the gift is meant to be a surprise, I unfortunately can't take the computer into a shop and test it. I wouldn't want my brother to spend £150 and end up with a monitor that can't be used at its native resolution.

I would be very grateful for any insights or information on this.

Thanks.
