Oliver,

Have you considered using virtualisation software such as VirtualBox,
Parallels or VMware Fusion to run Linux within OS X and then mount the
discs within the virtual machine?  Saves an enormous amount of hassle
trying to get Linux to run natively on Mac hardware.
