Yes! I did wonder about that. Being new to Digital photography, I
believed what I read about file formats being proprietory and thus the
need to use the Microsoft based software provided with the camera.

I was resigned to having to use MS Windows, or doing without access to
RAW files and to EXIF data in JPEG files.

I now know this not to be the case, at least for PENTAX *istD SLR. At
the end of this message is a list of cameras known to work with 'dcraw v6.2.

In the case of distos like SuSE (v9.1), it couldn't be simpler. Just
plug in the USB cable, switch on the camera and wait a couple of
seconds. The camera is automounted as a USB storage device (under
/media/usb....). Its then a matter of copying files to wherever......

WRT software, I use GIMP v2.0 (with RAW plugin) for image processing and
kuickshow to have a look at JPEG files. The latter can be used to give a
basic slide show. Desktop manager is KDE 3.2.

With the RAW plugin, GIMP will handle all of the file formats commonly
used on digital cameras. ie RAW, TIFF and JPEG. The only restriction
AFAIK is that GIMP (without plugins) will not handle 16 bit files that
are now found on the latest (very expensive) generation of digital SLRs.

Good idea! I doubt that I'm the best person to do it, as I rely on the
user friendly approach (eg SuSE) and would have difficulty in helping
the likes of Debian users.

BTW, I like your web page. Glad to learn that you are making progress
with PICs under Linux. I might one day have a play with this myself. My
soldering iron hand is getting itchy again.
