You could still write for windows, and presuming you're using something like
visual Studio, you then get MONO added in which will then give you native
Linux code without the use of a virtual layer like WINE; but of course
WINE's pretty cool these days too.

Conversion of existing programs may not be necessary. WINE is pretty
good these days...
