Good evening to Ian and Guy.

Part of my motivation in this comparison is to put me in a position to
offer assistance
to those giving Linux a try.

The first step taken by some, is to try a live distribution such as
Knoppix.
Maybe I should have added Knoppix to my query.

I wonder whether anyone runs Knoppix installed, rather than live ?

I have tried live versions of Knoppix, Ubuntu, AND Debian.
I have never cracked the ifconfig problem of getting the ethernet LAN to
work.
It is very different when you install. Maybe I need to enable DHCP ?

I will have a look at your replies more closely, but not tonight !
I would also like to know whether there is any real advantage in moving
on to Lenny before
it becomes "stable".

Best regards to all the gang.
I shall be off to a lecture on rebuilding the Severn Valley Railway 7:30
tomorrow at Kidderminster.

Best regards,

Geoff.
