If you're trying Debian, use the "testing" variant rather than
"stable".  Despite the name testing is pretty solid, and stable is
over two years old.  You might also try Ubuntu which is based on
Debian but allegedly easier to use and has recieved rave reviews from
all orts of places recently.  (Not that Debian is any harder than
anything else, but that's its reputation)
