Danny,

That's a very strange problem. If it happens in both gnome-terminal and 
xterm then it may be a shell problem. Are you running as root or an 
ordinary user? Do you run bash? Try looking at the inputrc file (either in 
/etc or ~/). Otherwise it could be a problem with the alert/visible 
bell...
