I play dvd's on linux regularly. Both from dvdr's and orginals. All play perfextly without jitter. Occasionally you will find that the sound is a little behind the video, but thats easily fixed.

Best dvd software that I have found is VLC (video lan client). It works on windows, linux and (i think) mac os x.
