many thanks for all the advice everyone contacted the supplier of my tower- interweb systems in chester, and they don't support linux!! pity. i checked the X300 radeon site and they only support X800 model for linux.it's possible that after a struggle i could probably eventually get it to work. but don't feel like perservering. i tried to install XP but the hard drive is sata and needs a special file txtsetup.oem to precede bootup and my computer doesn't find it so even with windows this is not going to be an easy ride back to the drawing board and thanks again to everyone john scarborough
