I'll give you mine, honestly.

There was the weather.

The fact that the first meeting at the school didn't work because we
spent, essentially, an hour watching Gavin not get the projector
working - that was an expectations-disappointment thing. It taught me
not to expect anything to actually happen (I worked in marketing for
years, so I say that from that perspective). Also, if Gavin can't get
it to work, then who can? And if we can't, then there are no
facilities at Scalby School.

Then there's the fact that, because we don't have set dates this one
is right next to next weeks one. I don't want to miss next weeks one,
so I'd rather miss this one.

Then there's no beer. It's OK to sit around musing over the latest and
greatest in the Linux world and catching up with friends over beer,
but in a school it's not so attractive. So yes, the school thing has
to have a subject and something has to happen for it to work.

It's also further, for me. I'm going to have to drive, so that means
picking other people up. The faff of organising that, of not finding a
car parking space when I get back, of not being able to go for a beer
after because I'm driving, the cost of driving, having to think about
whether the car's clean and tidy for friends .. all for an hour and a
half watching someone fail to install something. The balance isn't
right.

I was all up for it, but as the day wore on I got out of the idea, and
when I talked to colleagues they felt similar, so I bombed out.

Part of the solution, for me, is (as I've said before) a year's worth
of dates. If we know dates we can start to think about what to do in
them.

Otherwise, it's like I said when you came with this. Awesome that you
did it (actually, I'm not sure I did say that first time around), but
not sure I'm really up for actually coming to them. What with there
being no beer and all.

Did I mention there's no beer at Scalby School?

J
