Nope :-(

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
       missing codepage or other error

$ dmesg | tail
...
FAT: bogus number of FAT structure
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev loop0.

(or with UDF):
UDF-fs: No partition found (1)

Yup, it burns OK[1]. However I now have

ls -lh /media/cdrom1/*
/media/cdrom1/ext:
total 70K
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 64K 1978-07-14 01:00 lot_x.vcd
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 5.2K 1978-07-14 01:00 psd_x.vcd

/media/cdrom1/mpegav:
total 687M
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 687M 1978-07-14 01:00 avseq01.dat

/media/cdrom1/segment:
total 0

/media/cdrom1/vcd:
total 70K
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2.0K 1978-07-14 01:00 entries.vcd
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2.0K 1978-07-14 01:00 info.vcd
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 64K 1978-07-14 01:00 lot.vcd
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 1.9K 1978-07-14 01:00 psd.vcd

Which still doesn't mean anything to 'file' or konqueror :-(
I've tried pointing xine at the (mounted) cdrom and at the
mpegav/avseq01.dat file but it says it has no demuxer plugin
to handle the file.

Is there a particular plugin I should be looking for?

(Pointing mplayer at the cd or .dat file just resulted in a lot of
XMMS: found plugin ... messages.)

[1] as a way of getting at the data that's such a disgusting kludge
it's almost delicious ;-)
Surely there must be a way of writing a disk image file instead
of a real disc? (Although I can't see one in man cdrdao.)
