May I ask the obvious question (not to insult your abilities) that you are
using mount and umount to mount and unmount the partition respectively?
The only other thought that occurs to me is that you may have an automount
feature or daemon active on your Mandrake system and it's confusing matters.

I'm not a LFS expert (having only briefly looked at Gentoo and Lunar-Linux)
but building and installing gcc-3.2.x on those systems is quite a complicated
process. I suspect you've missed a step in the procedure. This isn't uncommon
because I've found these build-from-source distributions to be poorly
documented. Gentoo seems to be the better of the bunch though.
